The Garden State Ski Club Celebrates Its Golden Anniversary
50 Years and Still Going
Downhill—

(Maywood, NJ)--The Garden State Ski Club, one of the largest,
most active outdoor sports and social organizations in New Jersey,
celebrates its 50th anniversary with a Golden Gala in May 2008.
Three hundred GSSC members, including many of the club's past
presidents, will gather in early May at the Park Ridge Marriott for
dinner and dancing, to toast the club's golden anniversary and to
share fifty years of memories of fun with friends on and off the
slopes. Said Golden Gala chair, Pat Mazzucca, "This is going to be
an incredible event; it may be the largest event this club has ever
held. Past members from all over the country are flying in for this
special night."
Voted the number 1 singles club by New Jersey Monthly, the
GSSC got its start in the late 1950s when a small group of friends
from Bergen County discovered the exciting new sport of skiing
during their trips to the Adirondacks. Soon this group, calling
themselves "the boys from Jersey," was hooked. Enjoying a spirit of
camaraderie that thrives even today, the group grew as they met
other ski enthusiasts from Bergen on the slopes, at parties, and by
word-of-mouth. In April 1958, the loose association of skiers became
founders of a nonprofit social organization they called the Garden
State Ski Club. The first meetings were held in members' living
rooms, and then as the group expanded, they met at the upstairs
offices of a car dealership in Westwood, and then at area
restaurants. Since about 1974, the meetings have been held at
Victor's Maywood Inn in Maywood, NJ.
Today, GSSC has over 400 members and is a member club of the NJ Ski
Council. Members ski together using the club's Vermont lodge,
located near Killington, at ski destinations out West, in Europe and
Canada, and wherever they can find some good snow! Downhill skiing
is still the most popular winter sport with club members, but many
in the club also enjoy Nordic (cross-country) skiing, racing,
snowboarding, and snowshoeing. The club welcomes singles and couples
21 and over, whether they're experienced skiers or not, who are
interested in learning to have more fun with winter sports. Members
can take advantage of discount lift tickets and discounts at local
area ski shops. The club also has diverse and fun year-round
activities, including tennis, canoeing, mixers, bike trips, bowling,
golf trips, rollerblading, hiking, barbecues, dinners, weekends at
the Jersey shore, and dancing. Early May also brings the club's
annual whitewater rafting trip on the upper reaches of the Hudson.
The Garden State Ski Club meets every Tuesday at 8:30 PM at
Victor's
Maywood Inn, 122 West Pleasant Avenue, Maywood,
NJ, throughout the year. Schedule may vary in summer; check the Web
