New resort management company,
Alterra Mountain Co.,
set to rival Vail Resorts
KSL Capital Partners along with Henry Crown and Company—the joint venture that has been busy curating ski destinations across North America under its umbrella since last summer—has announced its name: Alterra Mountain Company. Alterra stems from the fusion of the words altitude and terrain. The destination group is headquartered in Denver, Colorado and boasts 12 premier ski destinations: Winter Park and Steamboat, CO; Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain and Big Bear, California; Stratton, Vermont; Snowshoe, West Virginia; Tremblant, Quebec; Blue Mountain, Ontario; and Deer Valley, Utah. CMH Heli-Skiing and Summer Adventures—the largest heli-skiing operation in the world and a surprisingly overlooked acquisition by the joint venture—is also under Alterra’s belt. Notably missing from the Alterra umbrella are the four mountains that comprise Aspen Snowmass, which are owned by Henry Crown and Company.

Our vision at Alterra Mountain Company is to protect and enhance what makes each destination special, inviting guests back to their favorite mountain, and enticing them to visit new destinations on their bucket list,” said David Perry, president and COO of Alterra. “We respect and continue to learn from the pioneers and leaders that built these iconic locations and paved the way before us, as we push the boundaries and innovate for our future.”
According to Alterra, its goal is to empower the leaders at each destination to “be decisive, creative, and bold in order to retain each mountain’s authentic character,” something locals and longtime visitors will certainly hope for. The company is planning to release details of its new season pass offering in the coming months, which will include access to all 12 destinations as well as other perks and benefits for passholders. Now that the group has a name and has announced that work on a united season pass is underway, the ski resort consolidation story, as we’ve been reporting on, is poised to get juicier as we move further into 2018.
