It’s out with the old and in with the new for many North American ski areas and resorts this summer, with 10 of the most notable ski destinations undergoing infrastructure changes. From new lifts, to revamped lodges, skiers can expect to see some upgrades and updates at their favorite resorts come winter.

1. Red Mountain Resort, British Columbia
Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, British Columbia, is undergoing a lot of major changes this summer.

Red Mountain, home to this year’s Powder Week and an incredible amount of snow, is working on installing a connecting lift from the Grey Chair to the Silverlode Chair, while also adding additional parking, along with building a new on-mountain hostel.

Red Mountain hopes that the connecting lift between the Grey and Silverlode chairs will relieve congestion during busy days at the resort and that the hostel will provide an affordable on-mountain experience.

Red Mountain also stated that the new hostel will serve as staff housing during slower times of the year. They are also building several on-mountain cabins and a clubhouse this summer.

2. Loveland Ski Area, Colorado
Loveland Ski Area is replacing Lift 1 this summer, and the 1,800-acre ski area let the public submit their name ideas for the new chair.

The name for the high-speed detachable quad has yet to be announced, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a “Rocky Mountain High” reference is made.

3. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Colorado
Arapahoe Basin is adding 30 new runs and 468 acres of new terrain called The Beavers and The Steep Gullies, which will open this season.

The Steep Gullies will be accessible via a 30-minute hike to the top and a hike back out to the bottom of Pallavicini lift, and is only recommended for advanced skiers and riders.

The Beavers will feature a new fixed-grip quad and terrain that will range from intermediate groomers to advanced tree skiing. The iconic, 40-year-old Norway lift was removed earlier in July.

Copper Mountain is getting two new chairs this season, both of which should be completed before winter. Copper is replacing the American Flyer lift with a high-speed six-person chair with bubble enclosures.

The resort is also removing the American Eagle lift to install a combination lift that features both six-person chairs and eight-person gondola cabins. Copper will be the only ski area or resort in Colorado with an active bubble chair.

5. Winter Park Resort, Colorado
Winter Park is going big this year, adding $28 million worth of upgrades to the 79-year-old resort. The Zephyr Express, which is located in the village, is being replaced by a 10-person gondola.

The new $16-million gondola will be the first new lift constructed at Winter Park since 2007. The resort is also upgrading their snowmaking system, which is over 40 years old.

6. Big Sky Resort, Montana
Montana’s Big Sky Resort will soon be the first ski destination in North America to feature an eight-seater chair.

Dubbed the Ramcharger 8, the high-speed mega lift will be the first of its kind in the world, featuring bubble chairs with heated seats and a high-resolution LED screen located at the lower terminal which will provide skiers with up-to-date mountain information.

Additionally, the Shedhorn lift, which is currently a double chair, will be replaced by a high-speed quad. Big Sky is also updating the Mountain Mall, adding features like a large event venue, additional seating, an outdoor deck, and new dining options.

7. Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, Quebec
Mont Tremblant in Quebec is working this summer to replace the fixed-grip triple Lowell Thomas lift with a detachable quad.

The summit chalet, Le Grand Manitou, is also being expanded and renovated. Additionally, the resort is adding 50 acres of new gladed terrain.

8. Deer Valley Resort, Utah
Deer Valley is making $8.1 million in mountain updates for the 2018-19 season. The Utah resort is replacing the Homestake lift, which transports skiers from the Silverlake Village to the top of Bald Mountain, with a detachable high-speed quad. Deer Valley is also installing more efficient snowmaking equipment.

9. Killington Ski Resort, Vermont
Vermont’s Killington Ski Resort is spending $16 million on resort upgrades this summer. Killington is installing a new six-person bubble chair, the Snowdon lift. The Snowdon will ascend to the Snowdon Mountain peak, which primarily offers access to intermediate groomers.

The resort is also bringing back lift service to the South Ridge area, with the relocation of the Snowdon Quad lift. The Snowdon Quad was refurbished and will serve as a way to connect skiers back to the north side of the resort.

Killington is replacing K-1 gondola cabins this summer with new 8-person cabins, as well.

10. Stratton Mountain Resort, Vermont
Stratton hopes to improve the skier experience by installing a new high-speed lift ahead of the 2018-19 season.

The Snow Bowl lift will feature 98 chairs and is positioned on the mountain in a way that limits wind and overnight icing.

The resort is also gaining a new grooming machine and is remodeling the Green Mountain Room, which hosts weddings and large events.

Also on our radar, these four resorts are undergoing major changes this summer, too: 

1. Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia
Whistler Blackcomb is undergoing $50 million worth of upgrades and updates this summer, which includes three new lifts. A 10-person gondola will replace the Wizard and Solar lifts on the Blackcomb side of the mountain, while the resort’s Family Ski Zone’s four-passenger Emerald Express is replaced by a new high-speed six-passenger chair. The three-seater Catskinner lift is also being replaced by a new high-speed four-passenger chair. 

2. Heavenly Ski Resort, California
The California resort is replacing the two-seater Galaxy lift with a three-person chair this summer. This upgrade will increase skier access to 400 acres of Heavenly’s intermediate terrain. 

3. Hunter Mountain, New York
New York’s Hunter Mountain is currently undergoing one of the largest expansions on the East Coast in recent years. The resort is increasing their skiable acres by 25 percent, adding five new trails and a new high-speed six-person detachable chair. This new 43 skiable acre area, deemed Hunter North, is expected to make its debut this winter. 

4. Park City Mountain Resort, Utah
Park City, the largest ski resort in the United States, is experiencing its fair share of construction this summer. The Utah resort is upgrading its learning area, named the High Meadow Family Fun Zone. Located at the top of the Red Pine Gondola on the Canyons side of the resort, the old High Meadow four-person chair is being replaced with a new high-speed lift. Park City’s Mid-Mountain Lodge is getting upgrades on its interior, and Cloud Dine, which was completely renovated in 2014, is expanding to accommodate 200 additional seats.
