Sugarloaf received key approvals from the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to begin work on its massive, 450-acre West Mountain expansion, which will include a new a high-speed detachable quad, 12 new alpine trails with snowmaking, and a new real estate development. Alterra Acquires Southern California’s Snow Valley. Alterra Mountain Company has closed on its acquisition of Southern California’s Snow Valley Mountain Resort. Snow Valley will join the operations of Alterra’s Big Bear Mountain Resort, located 11 miles away in Big Bear Lake, which includes the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski areas. More. SAM

A Powder Day Can Be Deadly—Even In-bounds. Here’s How to Stay Safe. During the 2021-22 ski season, 57 people died at U.S. ski areas, according to a report from the National Ski Areas Association. This was up from the ten-year average of 40 deaths per year. The leading cause of death was high-speed impacts with trees. Three deaths occurred in 2021-22 from Snow Immersion Suffocation or SIS. U.S. Ski Resort Surpassed the $300 Barrier for a Single-Day Lift Ticket. Over a recent weekend walk-up single-day lift ticket rates at Arizona’s 777-skiable-acre Snowbowl, north of Flagstaff, came in at $309 a pop for one day of skiing on the resort’s 55 runs and eight lifts. Dynamic pricing, long a staple of the airline industry and concert venues, lets sellers jack up the rates when demand is high, penalizing people who didn’t plan ahead, or, in the case of Arizona Snowbowl, skiers who have the audacity to want to hit the slopes of their local ski hill after a powder day.
